Nephrite Jade Brooch — "All Things Rise" Spring Motif, Hand-Carved

$169.00

A brooch is the one piece of jewelry other people actually see — you don't look at your own lapel all day. Carved nephrite in a quiet spring motif, pinned to a coat or a scarf, doing the work a necklace can't in winter.

The One Piece Others See

A ring is for you. A brooch is for everyone else — the piece that sits on the outside of a coat, at eye level, in the two seconds someone spends looking at you across a room. Which is why it should be small, deliberate, and not trying too hard.

This one is carved nephrite jade, in a motif the Chinese call 万物春生 — wan wu chun sheng, "all things rise in spring." Not a flower in bloom, but the moment before: the branch that has decided to.

What You Get

  • Hand-carved nephrite jade brooch — 70x22 mm

  • Weight: 100g — light enough for a silk scarf, heavy enough to sit flat

  • Pin and catch: silver-gilt. Nickel-free. Gentle for sensitive skin.

The Motif

Spring in Chinese carving rarely means blossoms. It means the edge of spring — a branch with two leaves, a bud not yet opened, a bird about to turn. The carving here follows that restraint: the jade is left mostly smooth, with the motif cut shallow so it reads as shadow rather than decoration.

Hold it at an angle and the cut catches light; hold it flat and it almost disappears. That is the intent.

Materials, Plainly Stated

Natural nephrite jade, un-dyed and untreated.

The pin is silver-gilt. Nickel-free. Gentle for sensitive skin.

How to Wear

  1. On a coat lapel, left side, an inch below the collar notch — the classic position, and the one that reads most clearly.

  2. On a scarf, gathered through two layers only: a brooch that pins four layers of cashmere will pull the weave.

  3. On a knit cardigan, near the shoulder rather than the chest — it moves the eye up and stops the pin from dragging the fabric down.

  4. It also works on a canvas bag or a hat, which is where most brooches end up after the first winter anyway.

Care

Jade is tough against scratches and fragile against drops — a brooch lives at the height where it hits tile. Wipe with a soft dry cloth; keep perfume and hairspray off it. When pinning, slide the needle through the weave rather than pushing — a brooch hole in wool closes, a hole in silk does not.

A Note on Natural Stone

Nephrite varies: some pieces run milky, some slightly green-grey, and the carving depth differs a little from piece to piece because it is cut by hand, not molded. Your brooch will not be identical to the photograph, and it will not be identical to any other.
